Foreword
This oyster, besides shaping pearls, has now begun to write—writing about its pearls and the thoughts that arise during their making. As you know, oysters lead deeply introspective lives, nestled in their shells, patiently crafting their treasures, layer by layer. And within this quiet world, thoughts sometimes weave together like fine threads of lace—delicate, fragile, yet worth collecting.
Pearls, I believe, are meant to be seen; their beauty is meant to be shared. And while the treasures this oyster shapes are often made of porcelain, perhaps these little texts are also worth offering. They are not grand masterpieces—after all, it is just an oyster! But if these humble musings bring even a moment of comfort, a touch of wonder, or the faintest glimmer of healing, then this oyster will have fulfilled its purpose.
With that, these writings now find their home under the name The World in an Oyster Shell. They will take the form of poems and short tales—think of them as a necklace strung with baroque pearls, each one unique in its imperfections.
To begin, I am sharing three entries. The first is a poem born while creating Mary-Gold’s outfit—before Valero had even entered the picture. The second is a poem for Valero, composed as he took shape to stand beside Mary-Gold. The third is a short tale spun during the making of his garments; after writing the poem, I became curious about how their story would unfold.
Another tale is already in the works, though the dolls themselves are still emerging. Sometimes the words come first, sometimes they follow, and sometimes there may be no words at all. I’ll simply listen to the process and let it unfold. And when something new is found, I will share it here.
